Black Aswan granite characteristics

Black Aswan granite, or Nero Aswan, is defined by its deep black base with subtle dark-grey and occasional fine white or silver crystals running through it. Unlike the warm red Aswan shades, this is a cool, dark stone whose appeal lies in its depth and uniformity. When polished, the surface takes on a mirror-like, jet-black finish that conveys luxury and contrast, making it a favourite for high-end interiors, statement surfaces and prestige architectural projects worldwide.

Product Information

Properties and finishes of Black Aswan granite

Black Aswan is a true Egyptian granite rating roughly 6-7 on the Mohs hardness scale, giving it excellent resistance to scratching, abrasion and heavy daily use. With low water absorption, strong frost resistance and high durability, it performs reliably indoors and outdoors, even in busy commercial environments.

Polishing is the most popular choice for Black Aswan, producing a deep, reflective jet-black surface that maximises its luxurious look. A honed finish gives a softer, matte charcoal-black tone, while a flamed or leathered finish adds texture and grip for exterior use. Black Aswan is part of the wider Egyptian granite range we quarry and process in-house.

Black Aswan granite: frequently asked questions

Is Black Aswan granite the same as Nero Aswan?
Yes. Black Aswan and Nero Aswan are two names for the same deep black Egyptian granite quarried in the Aswan region. "Nero" simply means black in Italian, a naming convention common in the stone trade, so the two terms are used interchangeably for this stone.

Which finish is best for Black Aswan granite?
A polished finish is most popular, giving a deep, mirror-like jet-black surface ideal for countertops and feature walls. A honed finish offers a softer matte charcoal look, while flamed or leathered finishes add grip and texture for outdoor paving and steps.

What formats and thicknesses are available?
We supply Black Aswan as gangsaw and cutter slabs, standard tiles and cut-to-size pieces in 2 cm and 3 cm thicknesses, with custom sizes and finishes available directly from our Egyptian factory.
